FBI MAKES ARREST IN EMBEZZLEMENT CASEOn Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at approximately 5:00 p.m., Special Agents from the FBI assisted by Jackson Police Officers arrested JANET KEYS, age 53, at her place of employment. KEYS, a resident of Jackson, was indicted by the Federal Grand Jury, United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi on April 8, 2008. The indictment charges that from 2004 and continuing through May of 2006, KEYS willfully embezzled approximately $72,000 from her employer, Mississippi Public Employees Credit Union (MPEC), where KEYS worked as an auditor from 1998 to 2006. The investigation was initiated when officers of the MPEC reported to the FBI that discrepancies were discovered in KEYS' records reflecting that she had converted credit union funds to her personal benefit and use by issuing money orders and wiring funds to pay creditors and others. KEYS made her initial appearance on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, before United States Magistrate Judge James Sumner, who released KEYS on $10,000 bond pending trial scheduled for June 2, 2008. Frederick T. Brink, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Mississippi, reminds the public that an indictment contains only charges and is not evidence of guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial, at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. #####
