RESULTS CONFIRM IDENTITY OF SIMPSON COUNTY REMAINS
Preliminary DNA testing on human remains recovered by the FBI's Evidence
Response Team and the Simpson County Sheriff's Department earlier this
month confirm that they are, in fact, the remains of a missing Georgia
woman.
Test results returned to Simpson County Sheriff's investigators and the FBI late
Thursday identified the remains as those of EBONY NIKOLE SCOTT, 23, of Jonesboro,
Georgia. SCOTT was reportedly staying in the Canton, Mississippi area in 2002.
SCOTT has not been seen since the fall of 2002.
" We are treating this case as a homicide investigation," said Simpson
County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis. "There are a couple of leads that we are following
and are asking for the public's assistance with information related to the case."
SCOTT's remains were unearthed after a two day search by the Jackson FBI's Evidence
Response Team and the Simpson County Sheriff's Department. Information developed
by FBI agents in another criminal investigation led to the discovery.
"There are still many unanswered questions in this case," said Stephen
F. Gomez, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Mississippi. "We
will continue to assist the Simpson County Sheriff's Department in this case
as we are needed. Our hearts certainly go out to Ms. Scott's family during this
difficult time."
FBI agents and Simpson County Sheriff's investigators are in the process of notifying
and identifying additional out-of-state relatives. Sheriff Lewis and A/SAC Gomez
ask anyone who knew Ms. Scott call the FBI at (601) 948-5000 or the Simpson County
Sheriff's Department at (601) 847-2921.
